Impact crash doors take a beating. That's not a criticism; it's the entire point. In warehouses, food production facilities, supermarket back-of-house areas, and industrial logistics operations, doors are opened dozens, sometimes hundreds, of times a day by staff, pallet trucks, forklifts, and trolleys. A door that can't handle that volume of contact reliably will fail quickly, and a failed door creates problems that run well beyond the inconvenience of a replacement.

At Kenfield, we've been manufacturing industrial crash doors and impact doors in Birmingham since 1983. Every product in our impact crash door range is custom-built to your specification, made to measure, and built from materials chosen specifically for the demands of high-traffic environments. Here's how we approach it, and what that means for the products we make.

What Makes a Good Impact Crash Door?

The answer depends on the environment, but there are consistent engineering principles that apply across all of them.

The panel material has to be able to absorb repeated impact without cracking, deforming, or degrading. The hinges have to be capable of hundreds of thousands of open-and-close cycles without losing their self-closing action. The frame has to maintain its dimensional integrity under load, year after year. And the whole assembly has to continue looking and functioning acceptably in an environment that may also involve frequent cleaning, temperature variation, and contact with equipment.

Cheap doors fail one or more of these tests. The panel delaminates or cracks. The hinges drop and the door no longer closes properly. The frame corrodes. When any of these things happen, the door stops doing its job: separating areas, maintaining hygiene, and managing foot and vehicle traffic.

We engineer against those failure points deliberately, using materials and components that have been selected and tested for exactly the environments our products are used in.

The Kenfield Impact Crash Door Range

There are four products in our impact crash door range. Each is designed for a different application, and each addresses the material and engineering requirements of that application specifically.

K550 Impact Crash Door: The Industrial Workhorse

The K550 is our heavy-duty industrial impact crash door, built for warehouses and storage areas where hand pallet trucks, motorised trucks, and forklifts are part of everyday operations. It's been specified by numerous major brands for over ten years, and it's been through a long time in the field across exactly the kind of environments it's designed for.

The frame is constructed from galvanised steel, with the option for powder coating in a choice of RAL colours. For environments where corrosion is a concern, a full stainless steel frame and fittings option is available, which makes it suitable for areas exposed to cleaning chemicals, moisture, or other potentially corrosive conditions.

Panel options include 7mm clear PVC for visibility, or a combination of clear PVC upper panels with a heavy-duty rubber lower section for additional impact protection in the zones where contact is most frequent. The door can also be fitted with additional rubber bumpers or an outer steel support frame to reinforce the structural opening where necessary.

Internally sprung for long-term durability, the K550 is built to handle constant daily contact without losing its self-closing action. Non-standard sizes range from 0.75m wide by 2.0m high up to a maximum of 2.8m wide by 2.8m high, and the door can be fixed either at jamb level or floor and lintel, depending on the structural situation at your facility.

Key features:

  • Galvanised steel frame with powder coat option

  • Stainless steel frame and fittings option for corrosive environments

  • 7mm clear PVC or clear PVC/rubber combination panel options

  • Optional rubber bumpers and outer steel support frame

  • Internally sprung for durability

  • Available up to 2.8m x 2.8m

  • Jamb or floor and lintel fixing

  • Made to measure at our Birmingham factory

K250 GRP Retail Swing Door: Lightweight Impact Performance

The K250 is constructed from glass-reinforced plastic, which gives it a different set of properties from the K550. GRP is rigid and impact-resistant while remaining considerably lighter than steel, and it doesn't corrode. That combination makes it a good fit for supermarkets, warehouses, and commercial premises where you need a door that handles daily contact well without the weight of a full steel-framed industrial crash door.

The K250 has become the impact crash door of choice for a wide variety of well-known UK businesses across retail, hospitality and logistics. It's available in sizes up to 2.4m by 2.4m, with a wide choice of colours and features, all made to measure against your exact requirements.

Hinges are high-quality stainless steel or composite double-action, which are the right specification for a door that's going to be opened many thousands of times without maintenance. The door comes with powder-coated framed acrylic vision panels as standard, is free from finger traps, and is suitable for disabled access.

Optional upgrades include leading edge and jamb seals, polypropylene bumpers, and an outer steel support frame in a choice of RAL colours.

Key features:

  • High-grade 8mm GRP panel: lightweight, rigid, impact-resistant, corrosion-free

  • Stainless steel or composite double-action hinges

  • Powder-coated framed acrylic vision panels

  • No finger trap

  • Suitable for disabled access

  • Available up to 2.4m x 2.4m

  • Optional bumpers, seals and support frame

  • Made to measure in the UK

K150 Polyethylene Food Hygiene Door: Impact Resistance in Hygiene-Critical Environments

The K150 exists because some environments need a heavy-duty crash door that also meets strict hygiene requirements. Food production facilities, supermarkets, hospitals, and other hygiene-controlled areas need doors that can handle the same volume of daily contact as an industrial crash door, but also need to be easy to clean and non-porous.

The K150 is built from 15mm high-grade polyethylene, which is a material selected specifically for this combination of requirements. It's non-porous, which means it doesn't harbour bacteria. It has smooth surface finishes that can be wiped down quickly and withstand frequent cleaning without degrading. And the polyethylene panel construction gives it the impact resistance needed for a busy swing door, without the weight that would make it difficult for staff to use.

The panel is 100% recyclable, and the door's swing-through design means there are no handles or touchpoints that could become contamination risks in clinical or food production settings.

Custom sizes are available up to 2.4m by 2.4m, with flush polycarbonate vision panels and finger-safe seals on both jamb and leading edges. An optional powder-coated steel support frame is available in a choice of RAL colours. Standard colours are white, grey and black, with multiple additional colour options including blue, red and green.

Key features:

  • 15mm high-grade polyethylene panel: non-porous, easy-clean, food safe

  • 100% recyclable material

  • Smooth surfaces suitable for frequent cleaning and wipe-down

  • No handles or touchpoints

  • Flush integrated vision panels

  • Optional finger-safe seals

  • Stainless steel or composite double-action hinges

  • Available up to 2.4m x 2.4m

  • Multiple colour options

K450 Hygiene Food / Clean Room Door: High Visibility for Food and Pharmaceutical Environments

The K450 is the right choice when you need maximum visibility through the door combined with the hygiene properties required in food and pharmaceutical applications. It's constructed from heavy-duty 15mm polypropylene and polycarbonate panels, with the polycarbonate used in the upper section to create a fully clear, high-visibility door that allows staff to see what's on the other side before pushing through.

The K450 is suitable for facilities where food safety and pharmaceutical operations are undertaken. Like all products in our impact crash door range, it's fully customisable: panel materials, colours, bumpers, hinges, and dimensions are all specified to your requirements.

Stainless steel hinges and a range of additional protection bumpers complete the build, and the wipe-clean surfaces are appropriate for the frequent cleaning schedules that food and pharmaceutical environments demand.

Key features:

  • Heavy-duty 15mm polypropylene and polycarbonate construction

  • Fully clear upper section for high visibility

  • Wipe-clean surfaces

  • Stainless steel double-action hinges

  • Multiple colour options for the lower section

  • Range of additional protection bumpers

  • Low maintenance

  • Made to measure in the UK

The Engineering Principles Behind Every Product

Every Kenfield impact door is made to measure. There are no genuinely one-size-fits-all crash doors, because openings vary, traffic types vary, and the environmental conditions vary. We configure each door to the exact dimensions and requirements of the site it's going to, which means it fits correctly and performs as intended from the day it's installed.

Materials chosen for the environment. Galvanised or stainless steel frames for industrial and corrosive environments. GRP for lighter commercial applications. Polyethylene and polycarbonate where hygiene is the priority. The material choice isn't cosmetic; it directly affects how long the door lasts and how much maintenance it requires.

Hinges that last. Our impact doors are fitted with high-quality stainless steel or composite double-action hinges throughout the range. The hinge is the component most likely to determine the working life of a swing door. We use hinges that are specified for the volume of cycles a busy commercial or industrial door will experience.

Impact protection options. Rubber bumpers, outer steel support frames, and rubber lower panels are available across the range to reinforce the areas of the door and opening most likely to take contact from vehicles and equipment. These aren't afterthoughts; they're part of how we configure a door to match the specific traffic conditions at your site.

ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 accredited manufacturing. Our quality management and environmental management processes are independently certified. ISO 9001 means consistent, audited manufacturing processes. ISO 14001 reflects our commitment to reducing environmental impact across our operations, including through products like the K150's 100% recyclable polyethylene panel.

Where Kenfield Impact Crash Doors Are Used

Our impact crash door range is specified across a wide range of sectors:

  • Warehousing and logistics operations with forklift and pallet truck traffic

  • Supermarket back-of-house and loading bay areas

  • Food production and food manufacturing facilities

  • Pharmaceutical and clean room environments

  • Hospitals and healthcare facilities

  • Hospitality and catering back-of-house operations

  • Cold storage and refrigeration facilities

The common requirement across all of these is a door that handles sustained, repeated contact without failing, and that continues to do its job reliably year after year.

Which Impact Door Is Right for Your Facility?

The honest answer is: it depends on what your door is going to face every day. Here's a straightforward starting point.

For heavy industrial use with forklift and motorised vehicle traffic, or for environments where corrosion resistance is needed, the K550 is the right starting point.

For supermarket, warehouse and commercial premises where you need a lightweight, rigid, corrosion-free door that handles daily contact well, the K250 is consistently the choice.

For food production, healthcare or any hygiene-controlled environment where the door also needs to be easy to clean and non-porous, the K150 is built around that specific combination of requirements.

For food or pharmaceutical facilities where maximum visibility is also a priority, the K450 addresses that specification.
