In hygiene-critical environments, every component in a facility plays a part in maintaining cleanliness, operational efficiency and safety. Equipment and cleaning procedures tend to get most of the attention, but the door systems used throughout a building also have a direct impact on hygiene standards, traffic flow and long-term maintenance.

Kenfield manufactures two hygiene door options built for this kind of environment: the K150 Polyethylene Food Hygiene Door and the K450 Hygiene Food / Clean Room Door. Both are designed for cleanliness, durability and ease of maintenance, but they suit slightly different applications. This guide covers what each door offers and how to work out which one fits your facility.

Why Hygiene-Focused Facilities Need The Right Door System

Facilities operating in food production, healthcare, refrigeration and logistics face constant demands on their door systems. Frequent personnel movement, cleaning regimes and equipment traffic all take their toll.

Traditional doors can become hard to maintain over time, particularly where surfaces are exposed to moisture, cleaning chemicals and repeated impacts. Where hygiene standards are a priority, a door designed specifically for easy cleaning and long-term durability supports those operational goals. The K150 and K450 are both engineered with this in mind, though they take slightly different approaches to get there.

K150 and K450: The Key Differences

Both doors share a barrier-free swing-through design, stainless steel and composite double-action hinges, and smooth, wipe-clean surfaces. Where they differ is panel construction and the standards they're built to meet.

  • K150: built from 15mm high-grade polyethylene, fully opaque, and available with an integrated flush vision panel. A general-purpose hygiene door for food, retail and logistics environments.

  • K450: built from 15mm polyethylene  with a polycarbonate upper section, giving a large clear vision area as standard.

Both doors are made to custom sizes and colours at our factory in Birmingham, and both are backed by our ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 accredited management systems.

The K150 Polyethylene Food Hygiene Door

The K150 is manufactured using a 15mm high-grade polyethylene panel. Unlike porous materials that are hard to keep clean, polyethylene gives a smooth, non-porous surface suited to frequent cleaning.

Its barrier-free swing-through design reduces reliance on handles and touchpoints, which helps in environments where minimising unnecessary contact matters. The K150 is a common choice in:

    • Food manufacturing facilities

    • Food preparation areas

    • Commercial kitchens

    • Hospitals and healthcare environments

    • Supermarkets and retail back-of-house operations

    • Distribution and logistics centres

Standard K150 features include:

  • 15mm high-grade polyethylene door panel

  • Smooth, easy-clean surfaces

  • Stainless steel and composite double-action hinges

  • Integrated flush vision panel

  • Optional finger-safe seals

  • Polypropylene impact protection bumpers

  • Custom sizes up to 2.4m x 2.4m

  • 100% recyclable polyethylene panel construction

The K450 Hygiene Food / Clean Room Door

The K450 is built from 15mm Polyethylene with a polycarbonate upper section, giving a fully clear top panel for good visibility as people move between areas. which makes it a practical option for food production and pharmaceutical facilities where those standards need to be documented.

The lower section comes in a choice of colours, including red, blue, green, white, black and grey, so it can be matched to signage or zoning schemes across a site. Complete with stainless steel double-action hinges and a range of protection bumper options, the K450 is built to hold up in demanding environments.

Standard K450 features include:

  • 15mm polyethylene lower panel with clear polycarbonate upper section

  • Large vision panel for visibility

  • Food safe

  • Stainless steel and composite double-action hinges

  • Choice of colours on the lower panel

  • Optional impact protection bumpers

  • Custom dimensions and configurations

The K450 tends to suit facilities that need clear sightlines through the doorway, such as busy production lines or areas where staff need to see oncoming traffic before pushing through, alongside those needing documented compliance with food and pharmaceutical standards.

A Practical Choice For Clean Room Doors

Many facilities need clean processing environments where contamination control matters. Every clean room application has its own requirements, so it's worth checking your specific classification and protocols before ordering.

Supporting Food Manufacturing and Clean Processing Areas

Food manufacturers need infrastructure that supports strict cleaning procedures while standing up to daily wear. The K150's hygienic polyethylene construction suits production areas where cleanliness is the priority. For sites operating dedicated hygiene zones, either door can be incorporated into a wider hygiene management strategy alongside other specialist access solutions.

Warehouse Doors and Internal Logistics Areas

Modern warehouse operations rely on the efficient movement of people, stock and equipment throughout a facility. Internal warehouse doors need to balance durability with ease of use, particularly in high-traffic areas.

Both the K150 and K450's lightweight swing-through designs allow personnel to move easily between operational areas, while optional impact protection helps defend against accidental knocks from trolleys and carts. For warehouse operators after practical warehouse doors that support hygiene and efficiency, either door is a proven option, with the choice usually coming down to whether a clear vision panel or full opacity suits the layout.

Impact Resistance Where It Matters

Busy facilities inevitably see occasional collisions and accidental impacts. Both the K150 and K450 are available with impact protection options, including bumpers designed to absorb everyday knocks and wear.

This makes both doors suitable for locations where impact crash doors are commonly considered, such as food production areas, retail stockrooms and back-of-house operations. Reducing damage from routine traffic helps minimise maintenance requirements and extends the service life of the door.

Supporting Refrigeration and Temperature-Controlled Facilities

Many food and logistics facilities include temperature-controlled areas that need durable, reliable access solutions. Both the K150 and K450 are frequently installed in food production facilities, supermarkets and operational areas associated with refrigeration environments, performing well in demanding conditions while remaining easy to clean and maintain.

Where dedicated thermal separation is needed, facilities may also use specialist cold room doors designed specifically for temperature-controlled applications. Within wider refrigeration facilities, the K150 and K450 provide an effective solution for adjacent hygiene-sensitive areas where durability and cleanliness remain essential.

Customised To Suit Your Facility

No two facilities operate in exactly the same way, which is why both the K150 and K450 can be manufactured to meet specific operational requirements. Customisation options include:

  • Multiple colour options

  • Custom vision panel sizes

  • Optional leading-edge seals

  • Optional jamb seals

  • Bumper upgrades

  • Powder-coated steel support frames in a range of RAL colours

This flexibility allows facilities to specify a door that fits their operational needs while keeping a consistent appearance across a site.
